Memphis Jewish High School Approved to Begin SACS Accreditation

Memphis, TN (11-20-2006) -- Last week Memphis Jewish High School achieved the first step in the process of obtaining SACS accreditation.  Adrian Weissman, head of school, hosted Pat Ashcroft, a Tennessee State SACS CASI specialist to conduct a SACS readiness visit.  After a day of closely reviewing many of the school’s policies and programs, Ms. Ashcroft announced that the Memphis Jewish High School has been approved for formal candidacy status.  MJHS can now begin the SACS accreditation process.

“This is a real tribute to the professionalism, dedication and commitment of our head of school and faculty,” said Andy Groveman, president of MJHS.

SACS is the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is the recognized regional accrediting body in the eleven U.S. Southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia).  Adrian Weissman, head of school, explains that the mission of SACS is “to help schools improve student learning through accreditation."

The process of accreditation has been designed to give schools the support to improve in the pursuit of their goals and expectations.  Throughout the history of SACS, the process of accreditation has been continually improved to enhance and enable the capacity of schools to improve through accreditation.  It is usually a 2-3 year process, but it is MJHS’ hope to have it completed by next spring.

Ms Ashcroft also advised Ms Weissman that MJHS will be one of the first schools to undertake the accreditation process under the new higher standards.  Ms. Weissman explained, “MJHS was excited to be able to begin the process.  We know one measure of quality is to always be looking for ways to improve.”
